Ecotourism and Fairtrade Tourism

Typical tour operation spending on a 1000$ investment (from the traveller)
invested and

Lodging and catering - Small structures, locally owned and (often) family operated. Many are involved in local projects supporting the preservation of the local environment and the local community. The food is generally produced locally (80%).
Transportation - Small, modern and low emission vehicles, often locally owned or in partnership with local transporters. Air and maritime regional transports are operated by small national or regional companies.
Local human resources - The tour guide is assisted in his tasks by very qualified local human resources such as the driver, the guides in the parks and on the sites, equestrian guides and native guides in the reserves, staff in the lodges....
Local development projects - depending on the tour, one or more local development projects are supported, such as reafforestation projects, community support projects, or a combination of both.

Tour Guide - Our tour guides are often national residents and are sometimes sent abroad. In all cases, part of their wages is spent locally. A majority of our guides live in the country where the tours they lead are operated.
Administration - Insurances, communications, stationery (made from at least 30% of recycled fibre); part of administrative expenses of a tour is spent locally and remains in the economy of the country.
the local
Development and benefit - In most cases, the development and the benefits generated by the tours do not affect the local economy except for our tours in Canada and some tours in Costa Rica.

Fair trade Tourism
Fairtrade tourism is a group of activities and services proposed by tour operators to responsible travellers. It is developed and operated in partnership with the local communities or, in a large part, with their collaboration. These communities play a predominant role in the evolution of the definition of these activities (possibility of modifying them, reorienting them or ending them). They also take part in their management and benefit from the advantages rising from these activities. The social, cultural and financial benefits of these activities must be locally received and equitably shared between the members of the local population.

Fairtrade Tourism must generate direct financial benefits to the local population and promote the conservation of the local environment from which the population gets its means of support. This type of tourism must also ensure a fair remuneration to all the workers, producers and craftsmen enabling them to cover their basic needs: health, education, housing and social protection. It ensures that the basic people rights are respected and establishes sustainable relations between the economic partners while supporting the conservation of the environment. Fairtrade tourism offers travellers quality services which benefit the visited regions.

In each of our tours, we support reforestation as well as local development projects. Our guided tours respect and promote the fundamental principles of ecotourism. Each one of our travellers, following his booking, receives a "Traveller's File". This very detailed document informs the traveller on all the aspects of the tour and describes the supported local projects specific to this tour. If you wish to learn more on fairtrade tourism before registering, we will be happy to answer your questions.
Ethical and responsible tourism contributing to environmental conservation and well being of local populations. Ecotourism is based on values and principles, it implies on behalf of the traveller a desire to learn and take part in the protection of the environment while supporting the local economy. Doing so, it provides a means of protecting the values and uniqueness of the local cutlures as it largely depends on conservation of cutlures and nature to exist.

The International Ecotourism Society defines ecotourism as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people." This is a basic definition of what ecotourism is to us. We agree that those who implement and participate in ecotourism activities should minimally follow these principles:

  1. Minimize impact;
  2. Build environmental and cultural awareness and respect;
  3. Provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts;
  4. Provide direct financial benefits for conservation;
  5. Provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people;
  6. Raise sensitivity to host countries' political, environmental, and social climate;
  7. Support international human rights and labour agreements;
As a member of The International Ecotourism Society , we follow and promote
the principles of ecotourism here outlined in our organization's operations and policies.

We're also a member of Sustainable Travel International dedicated to providing eco-certification within the travel and tourism industry and promoting international sustainable travel.
Ethical Ecotourism, our method...
The application of the principles and values of ecotourism and fair trade tourism in our tours does not only reflect an attractive theory and a beautiful speech; our social and environmental commitment is real and sincere. It is thus quite naturally that we define the tourism that we practise as ethical ecotourism. An amalgame of the concepts of ecotourism and fair trade tourism within a single term translating the way we operate, ecological and ethical practices at the same time, as well as showing our belief in solidarity.

For operating tours the way we do it, for all our tours, we depend on local communities: their culture and environment are sacred to us. As part of our mission, we also develop and produce ecotourism promotion documents for television, Internet and other medias.

Ethical ecotourism is a tourism of awakening and sharing in direct contact with the many realities of our world, thus contributing to better human relations and cultural exchanges, while protecting the fragile treasures of our planet.

This is an ideal we invite you to discover and build with us !
